The best view in Italy
The beautiful Villa Palazzola was built on the site of a Roman Consul's prestigious summer estate. It lies perched high above the extinct volcanic Lake Albano, 18 miles south of Rome. For centuries Palazzola was home to Carthusian, Cistercian and Franciscan monks and friars, whose memory is preserved in the stunning 13th century church of Our Lady of the Snows which stands alongside the medieval convent and its classical Italian garden.
In 1920, Palazzola was purchased by the Venerable English College as a retreat from the sweltering heat of Roman summers. In recent times, the College has developed this unparalleled site to create facilities for hospitality, recreation and conferencing; and is delighted to be able to open its doors to share with you the Villa's beauty and charm.
Only minutes away from Ciampino Airport, with its low-cost flights you can come for a few days retreat, pilgrimage or respite. You can organise conferences, weddings and other special functions here. Hire a car and explore the charming towns and Roman ruins of the Alban Hills, Marino and Frascati, lakeshore beaches, family-run trattorias, wineries and the nearby sea-towns of Ostia, Nettuno, Anzio. The opportunities in and around Palazzola are never-ending!
The Villa is located among 16 acres of protected woodland, sports grounds and nature trails. From the terraced sides of the garden, there are breathtaking views across Lake Albano to the Pope's summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, down to Rome itself and out to the Mediterranean Sea. The writer Henry James described it as "the best view in Italy!"
